The Magpies Were There
The magpies were there
When I was a child,
They rested in the shady trees,
Carolling, sharing
Their gratitude
For a world full of magic.
The magpies were there
When I became a mother,
They sat on the power lines
Threw back their heads
And warbled with joy
At the miracle of life.
The magpies were there
When I reached middle age,
They perched in the gum trees
Watched the world hurrying by,
And sang the same song
Their ancestors did decades before.
