My Life by Numbers

by Kylie (follow)

Young Marian
my life by numbers with my twins.

I left school at 16, for a full time job
A typist-clerk with a bank in the city
Day after day I travelled by train the 1.25 hours
With my short, short skirt, and very little in the kitty.

Just before 17, I left the family home
To spend $8.00 a week rent and move out and live on my own
Food, transport, entertainment and laundry
was the other $8.00 of my weekly salary Ė pretty paltry.

18, a plan to tour the country
Started in Hobart, Tasmania
Followed by Sydney, New South Wales
Got no further.

21, a wedding on my birthday
What a stupid thing to do is all I can say
I didnít love him, but this was expected of me
Or did I expect it of myself Ė this showed solidity.

Late 22, 2 babies brought home
Without much support, the father was never at home
Out smoking and drinking and having a fine time
The care of these babies was mine.

26 another pregnancy,
Letís hope itís not two this time, just wait and see
He suckled on my breast and sucked his thumb.
Thank goodness it was just one

28 (my Saturn Return) further study, to the hospital I applied
To get a certificate in nursing, so I could help provide
To pay off the land and house you see
That was the time when the father decided to give up work to be free.

31 graduated
Very elated
I did it
Give me credit

36 fell in love
Marriage had been on the rocks since the start
Traumatic and emotional time
But had to follow my heart.

39 started singing with an aícapella group
Fun rehearsing and performing
5 woman together
A real musical troupe

43 became a grandmother
What a delicious position
A management job, with a car and also which paid very well
My life looks so swell

49 began my life of overseas travel
Something I had never intended
But once started
I now can now never end it.

57 a life changing trip for me
5th African country, but West this time see,
Iíd been to the East and loved it
I wanted to see more, so hang it.

61 and now here I am
Paid working life ended
Iím glad that I can, as I really donít want to be
Caught up in that endless sea.
