Crisis in Kathmandu

The warnings were scarce and little knew what was about to happen.
The devastation of the surrounding area is still being discovered.
The death toll is climbing beyond 3000 people with fellow Australian’s amongst them.
Power is cut and communications are down.
There are no flights leaving town.

Landslides take place after the quakes
And the tremors inside and out are felt by the town’s people
And my friend, who I have known for 26 years, may be among them

Her mission was an expedition
To the base camp of Everest
With her partner, most likely all his idea
They were due in Calcutta yesterday but have not yet arrived

As the power is cut and communications are down
And nobody is leaving town

The people are hungry and without supplies
And my friend among them
Stuck in that town
With her partner to comfort her
Ease her fears and dry her tears

For this woman, this Doctor, who I’ve known for 26 years
We went to pre school together
She used to live down the road
I am good friends with her mother
The kind artist
I have known her all my life

And her fate is unknown
As the earth changes unpredictably
